Dil Se (1998)
Dil Se is one of the most famous and well-known Indian films ever created. It’s about a guy who falls in love with a girl but has to win over her family before she agrees to marry him, and it stars Shahrukh Khan. The soundtrack of Dil Se, directed by Mani Ratnam and featuring the talents of A.R. Rahman, is memorable.
It’s a must-see for every film buff or would-be film buff. Best of all, it’s been remastered and restored to appear even better than it did when it was initially published. If you don’t know Hindi, don’t worry; the movie will include subtitles in English or your preferred language.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
The romantic comedy film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was released in India in 1998. Karan Johar oversaw production, while his brother Yash Johar was the film’s director. The film featuring Madhuri Dixit, Shahrukh Khan, and Rani Mukerji in the forefront, also has Jatin Lalit music. For the first time, Hollywood has recreated an Indian film, an adaptation of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (in 2002).
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Mohabbatein (2000), and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham… are a few more well-known Bollywood films (2001). There are many more great romance films, such as Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), and Dil Toh Pagal Hai (2005), that are all well worth your time (1997).
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001)
Bollywood director Yash Chopra directed the romantic drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, released in 2001. Based on Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s book Anandamath, the film depicts the lives of three generations of an upper-middle-class family. It’s set in Amritsar, in northern India, before independence and partition, and it follows the lives of four brothers and their father.
One brother joins the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and alienates himself and his family by rejecting Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence; another brother joins the Muslim League to aid Pakistan’s independence from British rule; a third brother does not get involved in either side and stays out of politics altogether.
Two boys are separated at the border after division, each nation accusing the other of spying on its soil.
Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)
Nikkhil Advani helmed the Indian drama film Kal Ho Naa Ho in 2003. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Rishi Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, and Kareena Kapoor in her cinematic debut, Karan Johar wrote and produced the film. The protagonist, Raj (Khan), is an alcoholic trying to get back together with his ex-girlfriend, Nandini (Zinta), in this film.
She rediscovers her affection for him after watching his transformation. The soundtrack became very successful and included songs like Tum Se Hi and Dard-E-Disco. It went on to become one of the best-selling Bollywood films globally.
Saathiya (2002)
The principal actors in the Hindi film Saathiya 2002 are Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi. Feroz Khan, who also had an acting part in the film, directed it. The protagonists of the Bollywood film Saathiya are the doctors’ wives, Vidya (Aishwarya Rai) and Rajesh (Vivek Oberoi).
Vidya starts to think that her husband, Rajesh, is having an affair after nine years of marriage. One day, she decides to follow him; what she finds out, however, alters the course of their lives irrevocably. What seems like a hopeless quest at first turns out to be the beginning of a rediscovery of self and a newfound love for one another.
Taare Zameen Par (2007)
Ishaan Awasthi, a young boy of eight years old who has dyslexia, is the protagonist of the Indian Hindi drama film Taare Zameen Par, which was released in 2007. The film chronicles Ishaan’s rise from being labeled a low achiever to becoming one of India’s most accomplished and celebrated children. Aamir Khan helmed the film, which was shot in Mumbai, Delhi, and Ladakh.
The cast includes Tisca Chopra, Darsheel Safary, Kalki Koechlin, and Sharman Joshi. Three Filmfare Awards were given, two to Aamir Khan for best actor and one to the film’s music director (A.R. Rahman).
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006)
An Indian film, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, depicts a couple’s relationship breakdown. The story follows a former couple who have drifted apart and must figure out how to get back together. Actors Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Preity Zinta, and Rani Mukerji also feature in the film. Karan Johar helmed and produced the film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna under the banner of Dharma Productions.
One of India’s highest-grossing films, it also received accolades, including the Best Film and Best Director Filmfare Awards. The Bengali version, Eshami Jonyo Jege Aamar, and the Telugu version, Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana, are also adaptations.
